Thoughts on loss and the storms of life

May 11, 2016

I recently came across this article on loss via Thought Catalog, and w-h-o-a did it resonate with me!
Loss stinks. Point blank. There is no way around it.
We've all experienced loss of some sort throughout life, and no matter what sort of loss you've endured, I think you will be able to relate, or at least find takeaways from this article. So many things Heidi touched on are things I've found myself saying over the past two years. My loss is probably a bit more unique than most my age...losing a brother and a father in two year's time is a lot to experience at 25, then 27. Something I have come to realize is that after you experience loss, things never go back to the way they were (obvious? right)...but, you eventually find a new normal, a new way to approach the day. The loss is always there, you never fully heal, you just discover ways to set it aside to get through each day, and some days you have no choice but to give in to those feelings and face them head on.

So, that all being said...here are my 2 favorite lines/takeaways from the article Heidi wrote >>

+ The truth about the great, big losses in life is that they change you. They just do.
+ Maybe it’s time we started worrying less about healing our way back to wholeness and instead started asking ourselves what our brokenness is capable of teaching us. Which lessons exist within those tragedies. Which opportunities are born out of pain.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this with me, Jess. It really resonates with me too. Sometimes I want so badly to be the old me...to go back to that innocent, naive place where I didn't know a thing about what it was like to lose someone I loved. But wishing for that's not going to get me anywhere. This article totally inspired me.

I'm so sorry you and your family have had to endure everything you have. It just doesn't seem fair.

    1. Thanks for popping in, Vanessa. I wish the same thing, but alas like you mentioned, it won't get us anywhere. So, we are left to find a new normal and a way to carry on. I loved this article and am glad to hear it inspired you!
